Founders Baron Walter von Richthofen and Matthias P. Cochrane originally designed Montclair to attract wealthier residents who were put off by Denver's "seedy" beginnings. Set apart by covenants that required home owners to build on large lots twice the size of Denver standards, build at least three stories high, use brick or stone only and last but not least... saloons & alcohol were forbidden.
The area became the incorporated town of Montclair in 1888. Not long afterward, the silver crash of 1893 brought panic and seized all development. By 1900 the U.S. Census recorded only 88 families living in Montclair.
The newly created City and County of Denver wanted to incorporate the town of Montclair in 1902. Strong objections pushed the case all the way to the State Supreme Court, Montclair lost the battle and the annexation was made final in 1903. Mayor Robert W. Speer did all that he could to ease the transition by extending Richthofen's system of parkways, boulevards, planting trees, erecting fountains and building monuments. Soon after that, the Montclair Improvement Association convinced the City of Denver to add curbs, gutters, oiled lighted streets, water, gas, sewer system, parks, parkways and other services.
In 1975 residents and Denver City Council voted to make the heart of Montclair a designated historic district. Montclair is a living model of the American suburban dream.
Today this thriving neighborhood is bordered on the east by the Lowry urban community. With hundreds of acres designated to parks and open space, this close-by area also offers a sports complex, golf course, ice arena and the Montclair RecreationCenter that can be enjoyed by all. The gymnasium includes basketball and volleyball programs, lap pool, leisure pool, locker rooms, crafting spaces, multi-purpose rooms, a woodworking shop and a youth lounge.
